Little Things - Produce

I love produce. I especially love when it is delivered right to my doorstep in a big, waxed, cardboard box! We jumped on the Farm Fresh To You movement a couple months ago.
We take advantage of local Farmer's Markets in the summer, but in the Fall and Winter month, the markets themselves are few and typically on days one of us work. This was a great way for us to continue eating seasonally from local farms and have organic produce. Our box comes every other Friday, typically in the mornings, and is at our front door when we get up. Our lovely box's contents are fresh and crisp, many times with more than a noticeable amount of dirt.

This part of the process used to drive me crazy. I've found that if the produce is not washed thoroughly (that's a lot of dirt there), dried, and put into Tupperware containers lined with paper towels, the produce will wilt very fast. The beauty of this process is it gives you a really amazing connection with the food you'll be putting into your body. I'm probably sounding a lot like the patchouli wearing Lucy from five years ago, but there really is something beautiful about this part of the experience. This is probably the closest I'll ever get to being a farmer. I am so thankful that I am not the one doing the backbreaking work, and as much as I would love a garden, let's be serious, I'm not the gardening kinda girl. The washing and caring for this produce really allows me to see that I am doing a service for my family.

Being committed to a healthy eating lifestyle is so important. The little things we do now, like choosing  to eat local, organic fruits and vegetables, is really setting a foundation for our family. For Lola. She may not be as adventurous as we are when it comes to trying new things, but like anything, it comes with time. Plus I get to see this sweet expression when she pulls the items out of the box!

It all tastes better straight from the garden, doesn't it?

Wonderful shots. My husband is a farmer and the entire process makes me feel so close to the Earth. :)
